PRESS RELEASES PIIPA is pleased to announce new leadership. Dr. Steven C. Price has joined PIIPA as CEO/President, from his previous appointment at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he was Director of University-Industry Relations. Press Release (Word Document) ------------------------ PIIPA commissioned a pro bono legal report from the IP clinic at American University's Washington College of Law, based on an issue framed together with the Peruvian Working Group. The report concludes that it is consistent with international treaties if a national patent law requires patent applicants to file proof that biological materials were obtained with a suitable access and benefit sharing agreement. The report has been delivered to INDECOPI and is being made available to the public to assist other developing countries in bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations. While this outline only represents a fraction of what is on-line, the resources listed below represent a balanced view of the subject matter, while taking into account the diverse viewpoints and debate on the subject of bioprospecting itself. Additional links are also provided for further reference and critical evaluation of the current activities and debates on this multi-faceted, ever-evolving and highly relevant topic in today’s global forum. ------------------------ Jan 12-2004 DC Team Gets to the Root of the Problem Article - Pro bono lawyers challenge N.J. company's patents involving tubers used for centuries by indigenous Peruvians. - LegalTimes ------------------------ Feb 12-16, 2004 AAAS Annual Meeting Powerpoint presentations from the SIPPI symposia in Seattle are now available online. To access the powerpoints, please view the SIPPI website at http://sippi.aaas.org. SIPPI hosted the following symposia at the Annual Meeting this year: --Intellectual Property Resources for International Development in Agriculture and Health --Intellectual Property and the Research Exemption: Its Impact on Science --An Open Forum: Intellectual Property Issues and the Contemporary Scientist ------------------------ March 16, 2004 WWF Center for Conservation Innovation Bioprospecting as a conservation tool: Experience from Panama Bioprospecting has been criticized as an ineffective tool for conservation and development because benefits in the form of royalties are highly uncertain (only a small fraction of plant extracts are developed into drugs) and take years to go into effect. However, the experience of the Panama International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) project suggests that, by conducting value-added bioprospecting research in biodiversity-rich nations with local scientists, benefits can be realized even if a drug never makes it to market. Billions of dollars are spent annually by pharmaceutical companies and governments to support drug discovery research at small biotech companies and universities. Dr. Kursar and Dr. Coley will discuss the experiences of the Panama ICBG project in conducting more of this research in the source country, creating a range of more immediate local benefits. They will also discuss the applicability of this model to efforts in other countries to link development with fully sustainable uses of biodiversity. Thomas A. Kursar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology, University of Utah and a Research Affiliate of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama City, Panama. Phyllis D. Coley is a Professor in the Department of Biology, University of Utah, and a Research Affiliate of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama City, Panama. They have worked actively on bioprospecting issues in Panama since 1991, and are currently leaders of the collections program of the Panama ICBG. Thomas A.
